Nikon D70s Camera Field Test - Spring 2009

Location: Canyon, Texas and Palo Duro Canyon area

Here's some photos I shot with the Nikon D70s & 18-70 & 70-300 lenses* which I bought on ebay in the spring of 2009. They are shot in the Canyon, Texas area including the famous Palo Duro Canyon. All cropping was done in camera (no Photoshop cropping). The D70s, although only 6 megapixel, is a great camera with some similar features as the D200 such as 1/500 flash sync speed (great for bright sun fill flash) and has 1/8000 sec. shutter speed which is great for freezing action. (i.e. a cheetah going 60 mph if you're on an African safari :-). Here is a review on the D70s at highly respected Steves Digicams website (review). Though older 2005 technology, the D70s has been a remarkable camera and loved by many photographers-especially since the upgrades from the D70 to the D70s giving the electronic cable release capibility, larger LCD & improved menues, etc. It uses the popular DX** format. (see comparison of formats) I really enjoyed shooting the wild turkeys in Palo Duro Canyon that I came across. They acted like they couldn't decide if I was a friend or foe :-) At least it wasn't Thanksgiving so they were safe! I used the law of thirds in these photos when shot 3-28-09 after a snowfall in the Texas Panhandle. The 18-70 & 70-300 (or a Nikkor 18-200 mm if your budget allows) lenses can give you up to 70%+ photo capability but it is nice to also own a macro (i.e. Nikkor 60 mm f2.8), long telephoto and a low light fast normal lens (i.e. Nikkor 30 mm f1.8. Thanks for taking the time to view these photos and read this info.

* equivalent to 28-80 & 105-450 in 35 film camera terms.
**the DX format is smaller than the 35mm film 24x36mm size thus enabling smaller lenses and with extra advantage of older film lens compatibility
